2009 Veterans Open NAICCO Memorial Day Pow Wow
Celebrating Community Health: Living To See Four Generations
Veterans of war traditionally open this Memorial Day weekend Pow Wow. They will lead pow wow dancers into the center circle of the
arena to start each day with a prayer and ceremonial flag-raising. As the festival gathering of people is one of the oldest ways to
be part of community, the tradition continues. The balance of each day is filled with music, dancing, contests, food, arts and crafts.
Pow wow vendors offer handmade unique items and jewelry direct to the public through this venue. It is an enriching way to see art
and life intertwined.
One feature to look for will be the emphasis on individual and family health. A banner will be raised as the extended weekend events proceed.
It will be "hand" painted with the personal and colorful hand prints of participants who pledge toward a healthier lifestyle.
The aesthetic honors the ancestral process of making marks for identification purposes. By the end of the pow wow, this banner should fly
high with personal commitment toward the responsibility of taking charge of the health of ourselves, our families and each other community-wide.
The gates open each day at 11AM with the dancing. Grand Entry of all dancers occurs twice daily at 1PM and again at 7PM (5PM on
Monday). Not to be missed are the two step and team dance contests beginning 9:30PM Sunday or Karaoke, from 9PM to midnight on Saturday evening.
Attending a pow wow can dispel many common misconceptions and negative images which separate peoples from each other.
Dates: To be announced
Location: Franklin County Fairgrounds, 4100 Columbus Street, Hilliard, Ohio
Admission: Adults $7. Seniors and students $3. Children 5 and under are free. Weekend passes are available for $15. Bringing a chair is encouraged.
