Columbus Ohio Christmas Festivities

A Season of Giving - City Hall Tree Lighting Ceremony

The City of Columbus is proud of the kindness and generosity of the people who make up this great community. Each year, a reminder of that generosity comes not only in kind words and good deeds, but also in the form of a unique gift - a 35-foot tall gift, to be exact. Monday, November 10, city crews will harvest a 35' Norway Spruce tree that will become the centerpiece of the downtown holiday scene. The 2008 holiday tree is a gift from Mr. and Mrs. David Gay, residents of the Martin Avenue neighborhood in western Columbus.

With the help of a 100' crane, the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department's Forestry Division will remove the tree from Mr. and Mrs. Gay's property and transport the tree to its holiday home on the Broad Street Plaza of City Hall. Upon arrival, the tree trunk will be lowered into a 3' deep hole in the plaza and cabled to the ground with high tension wire to help withstand the strong downtown winds. During the holiday season, the tree will be aglow with energy-saving LED lights, and adorned with glistening gold garland, handmade ornaments and 3-dimensional lighted snowflakes. Traditionally, Mayor Michael B. Coleman, and members of City Council are on hand to throw the ceremonial switch to light the tree and signal the arrival of the season's most anticipated guest.

The City Hall Tree Lighting Ceremony is produced by the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department. This event is made possible through the support of AEP Ohio, Boehringer Ingleheim Roxane, Inc., LeVeque Enterprises, Schooley Caldwell Associates, MSI, Ohio CAT, smart center Easton a Germain Company, Black Creek Bistro and Katzinger’s Deli. Holiday display and handmade ornaments created by the Greater Columbus Arts Council’s Art in the House after school program, in partnership with TRANSIT ARTS and the Columbus Federation of Settlements, and financially assisted by the Franklin County Board of Commissioners.
